7th January

Happy New Year and welcome back to the Spring Term.  We hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and would like to thank parents for the kind gifts received before Christmas; we are still enjoying the biscuits!

I (Mrs Sharpe) will be leaving school at half-term to explore pastures new!  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hornby and found everyone friendly and supportive.  The details of the post are being shared on Facebook today I believe.

Topic Webs for this term are attached along with this email.

Class News.

Years 5 and 6.  The children have settled back in well.  They had fun drawing human bodies on the playground and working in groups to draw and label the organs in the body for their new science topic.

In Literacy the children have been investigating Spain and creating interesting questions to research.

Maths has been centred around decimals and fractions, they have all worked hard and done really well.

Homework has been sent to the children’s OneDrive.

Year 6 Star of the week: Dominic for good work naming and drawing parts of the human body in science.

Year 5 Star of the week: Antoni for excellent work in maths with decimal numbers.

Years 3 and 4. I have really enjoyed getting back and getting into the swing of things this week.  The children have come back ready to learn and have worked really hard.  It can take time when we have had time off to get our heads back in to learning mode!  We have started researching for our new topic in Science, Healthy living and linking this in with our English work writing a non-chronological report.  We have started to look at Spain and comparing Lancaster to a similar size place in Spain called Almeria.  Maths has involved thinking about multiplying and dividing. Mrs Cook.

Year 4 Star of the week: Evie for being an enthusiastic learner, always supporting others and being so patient.

Year 3 Star of the week: Peter for being an enthusiastic learner.

Infants are excited about beginning their new topic (please see information attached to this email). It would be great if you were able to send in/email a photograph of your house to help with the topic. Thank you.

They will all be going for a walk around Hornby village next Wednesday 12th January, a detailed information sheet is attached to this email.

Reception have been thinking about where they live and have been writing letters which we are going to post next week. Watch out for them popping through your door! They have begun to explore the composition of number six. They have enjoyed learning in the ‘Three Little Pigs’ role play area.

Years 1 and 2 have been exploring traditional stories, as we are going to be writing some this half term. We have been thinking about our favourite fruit and vegetables and how we can encourage Mr Wolf to eat his five a day. In maths, we have been thinking about the composition of two-digit numbers. Some children have been adding and subtracting using a number line.

Infant Star of the week: Grace for fantastic reading and writing in her morning challenge work.

Certificate: Syd for a super effort in maths, drawing his own number lines to work out missing number problems.

Junior Dance is replacing football this term.  The upper juniors will dance for the first half-term and the lower juniors the second half-term.  Unfortunately, the teacher is currently positive for Covid19, so will not be in school next week.  Please send PE kit for all juniors every week.

Junior Swimming. Pupils in years 3,4 & 5 will continue to swim on Thursday afternoons this term, starting next Thursday 13th January.  Please help them to remember their kit.

PTA News.  We have booked a Bags 2 School collection for Wednesday 19th January.  So, if you are having a clear out and have any good quality clothes, shoes, bags or cuddly toys, please save them for us.  We will send the bags home the first week back after Christmas.
