{"id":3390,"date":"2021-11-05T14:03:28","date_gmt":"2021-11-05T14:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hornby.lancs.sch.uk\/?p=3390"},"modified":"2021-11-05T14:03:30","modified_gmt":"2021-11-05T14:03:30","slug":"5th-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hornby.lancs.sch.uk\/index.php\/2021\/11\/05\/5th-november\/","title":{"rendered":"5th November"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s good to have everyone back in school as we prepare for the lead up to Christmas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class News.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 5 and 6 <\/strong>have been looking at metaphors, similes and imagery work in literacy particularly related to an extract from William Wordsworth\u2019s poem \u2018Prelude\u2019.\u00a0 There have been lots of maths games and activities to practise multiples and prime numbers, hence the aching brains.\u00a0 We have started a new topic in DT around Roman Mosaics, children have been busy creating replica mosaics with a partner.\u00a0 These will soon be on display in the school entrance hall.\u00a0 Upper juniors finally got their turn for football this week. Please can we remind parents to send a full outdoor PE kit and spare socks as it will be outside in all weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 5 Star of the week: Noah <\/strong>\u2013 for his excellent contributions to lessons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 6 Star of the week: Ava <\/strong>\u2013 for her progress in maths.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 3 and 4.\u00a0 <\/strong>It has been lovely to have everyone back this week.\u00a0 We have been reading poetry, learning about different poetic features including similes and alliteration.\u00a0 We are going to read some classic and nature poetry including &#8216;I wandered lonely as a cloud&#8217; by Wordsworth in preparation for our trip to Grasmere in a few weeks&#8217; time.\u00a0 We are starting to explore addition and subtraction in Maths and have risen to the challenge of problem solving this week.\u00a0 Science has seen the start of our &#8216;A world of living things&#8217; topic.\u00a0 Focusing on the beautiful plants and remarkable animals on our planet, we will look at what is special about something that is alive whilst also discovering how living things are grouped according to their feature.\u00a0 We will produce a pop-up book as part of the topic.\u00a0 Please look out for the new homework grid coming home this week, there are some additions so please have a read through and do ask if you have any questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 4 Star of the week: Ruby Harrison<\/strong> for working really hard on her Paddington Chapter.\u00a0 Reading over her work and editing to improve it as she went along.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Year 3 Star of the week: Adam Sedgwick<\/strong>\u00a0for working really hard on his Paddington Chapter.\u00a0 Adam really tried hard to edit and improve his work as he went along.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infants<\/strong> have enthusiastically begun their new Light and Dark topic. Please find information sheets in the Friday bag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reception<\/strong> have been making a role play rocket and mission control. They have been exploring how to light up the dark den. They baked tasty treats to share love with others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Years One and Two<\/strong> have been writing character profiles for &#8216;Harry the Happy Mouse&#8217; in English. We have started daily &#8216;Number Fun&#8217; time in maths, where we build fluency with number facts and see different representations of numbers. In art, we did some sculpting with dough and clay to create Diva Lamps for Diwali festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infant Star of the week: Grace<\/strong> &#8211; Great effort with home reading<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certificate: Mark<\/strong> &#8211; Super phonics work, identifying initial\u00a0sounds in words (s,a,t,p).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young Voices <\/strong>\u2013 We are pleased with the response to the Young Voices Concert and the children are enjoying practising; they sounded lovely on Thursday morning.\u00a0 We now need to know if any parents would like to attend the evening concert on <strong><em>Monday 7<sup>th<\/sup> February 2022<\/em><\/strong>, you will need to make your own way to Manchester.\u00a0 There is a slip at the end of the newsletter today for you to indicate if you would like to buy tickets at <strong>\u00a320<\/strong> each.\u00a0 Please do not send payment at this point but this is your <strong><em>only <\/em><\/strong>opportunity to buy tickets through school and we need the form back by <strong><em>Monday 15<sup>th<\/sup> November<\/em><\/strong> at the very latest.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Junior Dove Cottage Trip<\/strong> \u2013 Mrs Cottam has organised for all junior pupils to visit Dove Cottage on <strong><em>Tuesday 16<sup>th<\/sup> November<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This trip links in with the current literacy topic on William Wordsworth. \u00a0Dove Cottage was his home and whilst living there with his family he wrote many of his greatest poems.\u00a0 The total cost of the trip will be \u00a313.50 per child, please complete the slip at the end of the newsletter giving permission for the trip and return it in the bag on Monday.\u00a0 Payment can be made through our online SchoolMoney App or sent with the slip.\u00a0 An information sheet with more details will follow next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vision Screening<\/strong> \u2013 Reception and Year 1 children are invited to take part in the Vision Screening on <strong><em>Tuesday 16<sup>th<\/sup> November<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Information regarding this is included in their Friday bags; this is an \u2018opt-out\u2019 assessment and therefore you only need to return the slip if you do not want the eye test for your child.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.<\/strong> We will have poppies, zip pulls, reflectors, wrist bands and rulers for sale next week. The minimum suggested donation is 50p per item and we are limiting children to a poppy and one item each.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boxes of Hope<\/strong> \u2013 the boxes should be collected next week, so if anyone wants to do a last-minute box it needs to be dropped off early next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Colder Weather <\/strong>\u2013 as the weather is turning colder, it may be beneficial to send children to school with an additional base layer.\u00a0 This could be a long-sleeved top underneath their school t-shirt and jumper or tights\/leggings underneath their trousers.\u00a0 We are keeping the classroom windows open as part of our Covid-19 risk assessment.\u00a0 Children can always remove a layer if they get too hot, but will struggle to focus on learning if they are too cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welfare Assistant<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 we have a vacancy for a welfare assistant on Wednesday and Thursday from12noon \u2013 1.00 pm (term time only).
